Recording Low Light in the dark

Three nights at St George’s, Bristol, with the hall lights off and one lamp on the stand. Notes from the sessions.

Why the dark

The pieces on Low Light are quiet and close. Playing them in a bright, empty hall felt wrong, so we turned the lights down.

Microphones

Two spaced omnis about four metres out, and a pair close to the cello for detail. Most of what you hear is the hall.

Takes

We recorded long takes rather than patching bars together. Some of the album is one single take.
